Mount Kailash Tour via Lhasa – A Sacred Journey Through the Heart of Tibet.

The Mount Kailash Tour via Lhasa is the definitive Tibet pilgrimage for travellers who want more than the mountain alone. Over 16 days, you fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa, spend three nights in Tibet’s sacred capital visiting the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, and Drepung Monastery, then travel overland through Shigatse to visit Tashilhunpo Monastery before continuing west across the Tibetan Plateau to Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash. The journey culminates in the Kailash Parikrama — the 53-kilometre circumambulation of the world’s most sacred unclimbed mountain, crossing the Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres. This route is ideal for travellers who want the deepest possible Tibet experience: spiritual pilgrimage, Buddhist cultural heritage, and the raw grandeur of the Himalayan high plateau, all in one unbroken journey.

Why Choose the Mount Kailash Tour via Lhasa?

Most pilgrims reach Mount Kailash via the Kerung overland route from Nepal. That route is efficient, affordable, and well-designed — but it goes straight to the plateau without stopping in Lhasa. If you want to experience the full cultural and spiritual breadth of Tibet before reaching the mountain, the Lhasa route is the right choice.

Starting in Lhasa at 3,650 metres gives your body three full days to acclimatise before you ascend further onto the plateau. You are not rushing to altitude — you are easing into it while exploring one of Asia’s most extraordinary cities. The Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, the Barkhor market, Sera and Drepung monasteries — these are not tourist detours. They are integral chapters of the same pilgrimage, all pointing toward the sacred peak in the west.

From Lhasa, the overland drive to Shigatse takes you along the Yarlung Tsangpo River and delivers you to Tashilhunpo Monastery — the seat of the Panchen Lama and home to a 26-metre gilded Maitreya Buddha. From Shigatse, the route continues west across the high plateau, through remote Tibetan settlements and over Mayum La Pass, until the flat mirror of Lake Manasarovar appears on the horizon and Mount Kailash rises, pyramid-perfect, beyond it.

Permits Required for the Kailash Tour via Lhasa

The Lhasa route requires additional permits compared to the Kerung overland route because you are flying into Tibet and travelling through more restricted zones. All permits below are handled by our team once your booking is confirmed and your passport details are submitted. Permit processing begins 3–4 weeks before departure — early booking is strongly advised.

Permit / Document Included? Details
Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) YES — Included Mandatory for all foreign nationals entering Tibet. Issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau. Required before the Kathmandu–Lhasa flight. Without it, you are refused boarding.
Tibet Group Visa (Chinese Visa) Processing Support Included Individual Chinese tourist visas are not valid for Tibet. The group visa is applied for collectively. Requires valid passport (6+ months validity). Processing: 7–14 working days.
Alien Travel Permit (ATP) YES — Included Required for travel beyond Lhasa into restricted areas. Covers Shigatse, Saga, Ngari Prefecture (where Kailash is located), and the Kyirong border exit.
Kailash Restricted Area Permit YES — Included Specific to the Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar zone. Cannot be issued without a valid Tibet Travel Permit. Presented at checkpoints en route to Darchen.
Military Area Permit YES — Included Required for some sections of the western Tibet route. Applied for alongside the Alien Travel Permit. Handled as part of our group permit package.
Environmental Conservation Fee YES — Included Charged at the entry point to the Kailash environmental protection zone. Covered in the tour price.
Nepal Re-Entry Visa Processing Assistance Included If your Nepal visa is single-entry, you need a new visa to return from Tibet. We advise all participants to arrange a multi-entry Nepal visa before departure to avoid complications.

Permit note: Tibet permits can be suspended or delayed at short notice due to political events, Chinese national holidays (especially National Day in October), or policy changes by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. We monitor permit conditions closely and will communicate any changes to confirmed bookings immediately. This is why early booking and flexible travel insurance are strongly recommended.

I had been planning this pilgrimage for eleven years. The Lhasa route was the right choice — there is no shortcut for a journey like this. Three days in Lhasa before the plateau gave my 64-year-old body exactly the time it needed. The Jokhang Temple at dawn with Tibetan pilgrims prostrating around us was one of the most moving things I have seen in my life. And then Kailash. I have no adequate words. The guide who walked with us on Day 2 of the Kora spoke about Dolma La with such reverence that I crossed it with tears already on my face. If you are considering this journey, stop considering. Book it.

I came as an art historian with a professional interest in Buddhist iconography and left as something harder to categorise. Tashilhunpo’s Maitreya Buddha is beyond what any photograph prepares you for. The Potala on the hill above Lhasa at golden hour is a sight I will spend years trying to describe to students. The logistics were immaculate — 16 days, nothing mismanaged, everything explained. The Kailash Parikrama on Days 11 to 13 was physically demanding but spiritually transformative. Day 2 crossing Dolma La at 5,630 metres with our Tibetan guide chanting mantras — I will return.

We chose the Lhasa route specifically for the acclimatisation and it made a real difference. My wife has mild hypertension and we were cautious. Three nights in Lhasa, gradual ascent to Shigatse, rest day at Saga — by the time we reached Manasarovar we felt genuinely ready. The team was diligent about checking on her throughout. She completed the Kora with horse support on Day 2 and it was the proudest moment of her pilgrimage life. The Jokhang Temple darshan and the Manasarovar sunrise puja were experiences that no amount of prior reading had prepared us for.

I had done Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit and thought I knew what high-altitude travel was. The Tibetan Plateau is something else entirely. The scale, the silence, the light — it operates at a different frequency. Lhasa deserves two more days than we had; I am going back just for that. But the combination of Lhasa cultural depth and the raw spiritual intensity of the Kailash Parikrama in one journey is extraordinary. The guides were excellent in Lhasa and on the Kora. A Tibetan monk joined our group for the Dolma La crossing and that alone was worth the entire trip.

★★★★★  Dr. Sunita Agarwal  |  India  |  August 2024

As someone who has read the Shiva Purana and the Mahabharata references to Kailash since childhood, arriving at Darchen and seeing the pyramid of rock rise against the blue sky was a moment of profound arrival. But what I did not expect was how deeply moved I would be in Lhasa. Sera Monastery’s debating monks reminded me of the scholarly traditions of ancient India. Drepung, the scale of it on that hillside — it puts a different kind of reverence in you. The Kailash Yatra is complete on the Lhasa route. I cannot imagine doing it the shorter way after experiencing this.

FAQ

Question Answer
What is the difference between the Lhasa route and the Kerung overland route? The Lhasa route includes a flight to Lhasa, 3 nights in Tibet’s capital, and visits to Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera and Drepung Monasteries, and Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse. It takes 16 days versus 14 for the Kerung route and costs more. The main advantages are superior altitude acclimatisation, significantly richer cultural content, and a more complete Tibet experience.
Is the Kathmandu–Lhasa flight included? Yes. The Kathmandu to Lhasa return flight ticket is included in the Mount Kailash Tour via Lhasa price. This is a key difference from the overland Kerung route. The flight takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes and offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayan range.
Can I visit inside the Potala Palace? Potala Palace interior entry requires a separate advance booking and is not included in the standard tour. We can arrange interior entry at additional cost if booked 4–6 weeks before departure. The exterior circuit and immediate surroundings are included and deliver extraordinary views of the palace and the city.
Why is the Lhasa route better for altitude acclimatisation? The Lhasa route gives you 3 full nights at 3,650 metres before you ascend to Shigatse (3,900 m), Saga (4,500 m), and the plateau. This staged ascent reduces acute mountain sickness risk significantly compared to driving directly from Kathmandu into Tibet. Most participants on the Lhasa route arrive at Manasarovar and the Kailash Parikrama in better physical condition.
What permits are required and are they included? Six permits are required: Tibet Travel Permit, Tibet Group Visa, Alien Travel Permit, Kailash Restricted Area Permit, Military Area Permit, and Environmental Conservation Fee. All are included in the tour price except the Group Visa, for which processing assistance is included. All permits must be arranged before the Kathmandu–Lhasa flight.
Is solo travel possible on the Lhasa route? Yes. Solo travellers join a group departure. Independent solo travel in Tibet is not permitted for foreign nationals — the Tibet Group Visa requires group-based travel under a licensed operator. Solo participants on our fixed departures receive the standard group rate.
What is Saga Dawa and when is it? Saga Dawa is the holiest month on the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, commemorating the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing. The most auspicious day is the full moon, typically in May or June according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. Completing the Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa is believed to multiply the spiritual merit of the circumambulation. Dates change annually — contact us for 2025 and 2026 Saga Dawa dates.
Can seniors complete the Kailash Tour via Lhasa? Many participants in their 60s and 70s complete this tour. The Lhasa acclimatisation is especially beneficial for older travellers. We strongly recommend a pre-trip medical check, fitness preparation starting 2 months before departure, and advance booking of horse and porter support for the Parikrama. Our guides are trained in altitude sickness recognition and response.
What food is provided on the tour? All meals are vegetarian. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided daily. In Kathmandu and Lhasa you eat at hotels and local restaurants. Across the plateau and during the Kailash Parikrama, our cook prepares hot meals at camps and guesthouses. Packed lunches are provided on long driving days. Dietary requirements beyond vegetarian can be accommodated with advance notice.
What happens if I cannot complete the Kailash Parikrama? It happens more often than tour operators admit — and it is fine. If you cannot complete the Kora on any of the three days, vehicle escort back to Darchen is arranged. The Kailash Parikrama is a physical and spiritual challenge; there is no shame in listening to your body. Your guides will monitor your condition and advise you. Our first-aid kit and oxygen are present at all stages.
