Mount Kailash Overland Tour
Mount Kailash Tour via Kerung – A Sacred Overland Pilgrimage to the Holy Mount Kailash.
The Mount Kailash Overland Tour is one of the most spiritually significant journeys on earth. Over 14 days, you travel overland from Kathmandu through the Kerung border crossing, across the vast Tibetan Plateau, and on to Mount Kailash — the 6,638-metre pyramid of rock that four of the world’s great religions hold sacred. The journey culminates in the Kailash Parikrama, a 52-kilometre circumambulation of the mountain, crossing the Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres and visiting the turquoise waters of Lake Manasarovar at 4,590 meters. This overland route via Kerung is the most accessible path from Nepal into Tibet and is designed with gradual altitude gain to give your body the time it needs to adjust safely. Every permit, transport, guide, meal, and accommodation is handled — you focus entirely on the journey.
Overview: What Is the Mount Kailash Overland Tour?
Mount Kailash stands at 6,638 metres in the remote Ngari Prefecture of western Tibet. It is the world’s most revered unclimbed mountain — not because it is too difficult, but because it is too sacred. Hindus know it as the abode of Lord Shiva. Buddhists believe it is the seat of Chakrasamvara. Jain tradition holds that Rishabhdev attained enlightenment here. Tibetan Bon followers call it Tise, the axis of the universe. No expedition has ever been permitted to place a foot on its summit, and none ever will.
The Mount Kailash Overland Tour from Kathmandu takes you there by road — a journey that is itself part of the transformation. You cross the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung (Gyirong), drive across the Tibetan Plateau past ancient monasteries and wind-swept plains, and reach Lake Manasarovar before completing the three-day Kailash Parikrama. This 52-kilometre circumambulation crosses the Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres and is considered one of the most spiritually potent acts a pilgrim can perform. The overland route via Kerung is the most popular entry point for pilgrims from Nepal. It is more affordable than the Lhasa flyover route, requires no domestic Tibet flight, and allows your body to acclimatise gradually as altitude increases over several days of driving. The result is a safer, more comfortable journey with less risk of altitude sickness — the most common reason pilgrims are unable to complete the Parikrama.

What to Expect During the Kailash Overland Trip
The journey takes 14 days and covers a lot of ground literally. Here is what you will actually experience, day by day.
You fly into Kathmandu, where we handle all permit paperwork while you visit the valley’s temples and prepare mentally for what’s ahead. From Kathmandu, you drive north to the Nepal-Tibet border at Rasuwagadhi, cross into Tibet at Kerung, and begin climbing onto the Tibetan Plateau. The drives are long, some days up to 10 hours but the landscape earns every hour. Wide open plateau, ancient monasteries, the Brahmaputra valley, and mountain views that arrive without warning and stay with you.
You spend a full rest day in Saga at 4,500m. This is not optional — your body needs it before you go higher. After Saga, you cross the Mayum La Pass and reach Lake Manasarovar, where two nights give you time for sunrise puja, a sacred bath, and quiet time at one of the most peaceful places on earth.
The Kailash Parikrama is three days. Day 1 is manageable — a steady 10km walk to Dirapuk with the north face of Kailash filling the sky ahead of you. Day 2 is the hardest: 22km, crossing Dolma La Pass at 5,630m. Start early, walk slowly, and trust the process. Day 3 is short and gentle — you finish the Kora at Zongdau and drive back to Saga.
A few things to set expectations honestly:
Accommodation on the plateau and during the Parikrama is basic — guesthouses with shared bathrooms, no hot showers above Kyirong. It is clean and functional. Meals are vegetarian throughout: dal bhat, noodles, Tibetan bread, hot soup. Our cook keeps everyone fed and warm.
Altitude affects almost everyone in some way — headaches, slower pace, broken sleep. We carry oxygen cylinders and altitude medication. We monitor the group daily. If you prepare well, you will manage it.
The wildlife surprises people: blue sheep graze near the Kora trail, eagles circle above Dolma La, and the Tibetan plateau holds more life than it first appears. The nights are clear at altitude — the sky is genuinely extraordinary.
What stays with most pilgrims long after the trip is not the difficulty but the stillness. The Manasarovar sunrise. The silence at Dolma La. The moment Kailash appears through the valley on Day 1 of the Kora.
Mount Kailash Parikrama Difficulty — What to Expect
The Mount Kailash Overland Tour is rated Moderate. The driving days are long (up to 10 hours on some plateau sections) but not physically demanding. The challenge comes on the three days of the Kailash Parikrama, particularly Day 2 when you cross Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres — the highest point of the entire journey.
- Altitude is the primary challenge
The Parikrama reaches 5,630 metres at Dolma La. Altitude sickness affects people regardless of age or fitness level. The itinerary is designed with two acclimatisation days (Kyirong overnight at 2,800 m, and a full rest day at Saga at 4,500 m) to reduce risk. You must be able to walk 8–12 kilometres per day on uneven, high-altitude terrain.
- Physical fitness required
You do not need mountaineering experience. You do need to be physically active. Two months before the trip, we recommend daily walks of 5–8 km with a light pack, yoga or breathing exercises for lung capacity, and gradual uphill training. Pilgrims who arrive physically prepared complete the Kora with far less difficulty.
- Horse and porter support available
If you are unable to walk the full Parikrama, horse and yak support is available for luggage and, on some sections, for the pilgrim themselves. This must be arranged in advance. Porters are also available at Darchen. Participants who cannot complete the trek return to Darchen by vehicle from Dirapuk.
- Pre-existing health conditions
Participants with heart conditions, chronic respiratory disease, or uncontrolled hypertension should consult their physician before booking. A basic pre-trip health assessment is recommended for all participants over 60. We carry oxygen cylinders and a first-aid kit throughout the journey. Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness prevention can be prescribed by your doctor prior to departure.

What Our Pilgrims Say — Mount Kailash Tour Reviews
OVERALL RATING: 4.9 / 5 | Based on 187 verified reviews
| ★★★★★ Rajesh Sharma | India | September 2024
This was not a tour. It was a complete reset of everything I believed about the world, about myself, about what matters. Crossing Dolma La with prayer flags whipping around us and Kailash reflected in Gauri Kund below — I have no words for it. The guides were knowledgeable, calm, and genuinely devoted. Every logistical detail was handled with precision. Nothing was left to chance. I have done 11 pilgrimages in my lifetime. This is the one I will carry to my final day. |
| ★★★★★ Sarah Mitchell | United Kingdom | June 2024
I came as a non-religious traveller and left as someone who will return. The landscape of the Tibetan Plateau is unlike anything else on earth. The acclimatisation days at Saga were essential — I felt genuinely prepared by the time the Parikrama began. The team responded to every question before I had finished asking it. Accommodation was basic on the plateau but clean and warm. The Kailash North Face from Dirapuk camp at sunset is burned into my memory permanently. |
| ★★★★★ Anjali & Vikram Patel | USA | May 2024 (Saga Dawa)
We specifically booked the Saga Dawa departure after reading about the festival. It was one of the best decisions of our lives. Hundreds of Tibetan pilgrims and monks were completing the Kora alongside us, chanting, prostrating, carrying butter lamps. The spiritual energy was overwhelming. Our guide explained the significance of every site, every ritual. The permits and logistics were completely sorted — we just walked and absorbed it all. |
| ★★★★★ Dr. Priya Nair | India | October 2023
As a physician who has spent years treating altitude sickness patients, I was apprehensive about taking my 68-year-old mother on this journey. The team’s handling of high-altitude safety was exceptional. Oxygen was always available, the altitude gain was carefully paced, and my mother completed the entire Parikrama with horse support. The guides knew the symptoms of AMS and how to respond. My mother cried at Manasarovar. I cried at Dolma La. We both came back changed. |
| ★★★★★ Thomas Gruber | Germany | August 2024
I had spent months comparing operators before booking. What set this team apart was the quality of information available before I even made contact — the itinerary was detailed, the permit explanation was clear, the FAQ answered every question I had. On the trip itself, every day matched exactly what was described. The cook on the plateau was outstanding. The local Tibetan guide had personal stories about every monastery and pass. Worth every dollar. |
FAQ
| Question | Answer |
| What is the Mount Kailash Overland Tour? | The Mount Kailash Overland Tour is a 14-day guided pilgrimage from Kathmandu to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, travelling overland via the Kerung border crossing. It includes the 52-km Kailash Parikrama, the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash. |
| Is the overland tour via Kerung better than the Lhasa route? | For most travellers departing from Nepal, yes. The Kerung route is more affordable (no domestic Tibet flight), allows gradual altitude acclimatisation over several driving days, and has a simpler logistics chain. The Lhasa route adds 2–3 days and a flight but allows you to visit Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse. |
| Do I need a Chinese visa for the Kailash tour? | You need a Tibet Group Visa, which is a form of Chinese visa issued specifically for Tibet. Individual Chinese visas are not accepted for Tibet entry. We handle the Tibet Group Visa application as part of our permit processing. Your valid passport and completed application form are required. |
| What is the highest point of the tour? | The highest point is Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres, crossed on Day 10 (Day 2 of the Kailash Parikrama). This is the spiritual and physical peak of the Kora. Lake Manasarovar sits at 4,590 metres and Darchen base camp at 4,690 metres. |
| How difficult is the Kailash Parikrama? | Moderate to challenging. The Parikrama is 52 km over 3 days, with the main difficulty on Day 2 when you cross Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m. No technical climbing is required. A reasonable level of fitness and prior acclimatisation are essential. Horse and porter support is available on all Parikrama days. |
| Can seniors do the Mount Kailash Overland Tour? | Yes, many pilgrims in their 60s and 70s complete the Kailash Yatra successfully. We recommend a medical check-up before booking, gradual fitness preparation two months prior, and arranging horse support for the Parikrama. Our staff carry oxygen and first aid throughout the journey. |
| What permits are required and are they included? | The Tibet Travel Permit, Kailash Restricted Area Permit, Alien Travel Permit, and Environmental Conservation Fee are all included in the tour price. Tibet Group Visa processing support is also included. All permits must be arranged before crossing the Kerung border. |
| Is solo travel possible on this tour? | Solo travellers are welcome and will be placed with a group departure. Tibet requires group travel permits — individual independent travel in Tibet is not permitted for foreign nationals. Solo participants joining our fixed group departures receive the standard group rate. |
| What food is available on the tour? | All meals throughout the tour are vegetarian. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included daily. In Kathmandu and Kyirong, you eat at hotels and local restaurants. On the plateau and during the Parikrama, our cook prepares hot meals at camp and in guesthouses. Packed lunches are provided on long driving days. |
| Can the tour be extended or customised? | Yes. Common extensions include extra days in Kathmandu for sightseeing, a side trip to Everest Base Camp from the Nepal side, or visits to Lhasa after completing the Kailash Yatra (adds 3–4 days and a domestic Tibet flight).
